Herbal Wilderness First Aid

June 6-7, 2020 :: 10am-5pm :: Hawthorn Institute :: Williams, OR

Facilitated by Brandon Fulton

The wilderness is a lively, abundant space filled with a vast selection of herbal first aid medicines.

First aid is our initial or immediate response to help treat an illness or injury. Whether out on a day hike or a long backpacking trip, basic first aid techniques and herbal knowledge will allow you to treat common occurrences, such as headaches, dehydration, upset stomach, dizziness, and/or any typical injury.

By learning these skills in wild outdoor spaces we are empowered to feel safe and confident as we go deeper into relationship with the natural environment.

In this full weekend, we will be focusing on Herbal Wilderness First Aid and looking at a range of practical, useful ways of applying herbal medicines to treat a wide variety of situations. We will also be looking at navigation techniques in wild spaces, along side of discussing environmental risks that you may come up against. With our perspective being from the wilderness, we will discuss assessment and treatment during first aid situations, and collaborate as a class for a hands-on learning experience.

What to expect:

  • First aid situations: bleeding injuries, blunt trauma, eye injuries, pain, fractures, strains/sprains, shock, respiratory, bites and stings, animal and insect awareness, digestion issues, and dehydration.

  • Techniques: splinting, bandaging, wound management, checking vital signs, constructing a stretcher/litter, preparing and applying herbal medicines.

  • You will also receive your own herbal first aid kit at this workshop.
